This session will explore trends in academic healthcare, with an emphasis on the alignment of academic and community providers. We will identify factors driving redesign of the clinical enterprise and discuss the range of options for structuring a partnership (supported by case studies from recent initiatives).

Karl Banty is a senior manager in the Academic Healthcare Division of ECG Management Consultants. Having worked closely with some of the nation’s top academic medical centers (AMCs) and children’s hospitals, Karl understands the challenges that leaders of these organizations face at a time of uncertainty and change in the healthcare industry. His expertise in developing clear and actionable business plans, with supporting financial analyses, is valuable to clients as they contemplate enterprise-defining decisions. Karl specializes in optimizing the relationship between teaching hospitals and faculty group practices (FGPs). He authored a study of more than 100 AMCs on this topic, examining the correlation between hospital/FGP integration and performance. Karl has recently assisted clients with a variety of other initiatives, including the development of a new FGP, faculty compensation planning, funds flow redesign, and service line expansion. He holds a master of business administration degree, with a concentration in healthcare management, from Boston University and a bachelor of science degree in economics from Northeastern University.
