Baystate Health seeks an experienced communications strategist to direct a robust content management program supporting the institutional priorities of this comprehensive regional health system based in Western Massachusetts. As a key member of the marketing and communications leadership team, the Director of Communications and Strategic Content will develop and implement strategic communications and media relations plans that advance Baystate Health’s institutional priorities and amplify and advance its reputational brand as an integrated health system committed to expanding access to high quality care, enhancing patient experience, being a workplace of choice, and teaching the next generation of physicians and researches through its partnership with UMass Chan School of Medicine.
The Organization: As the largest healthcare provider in Western Massachusetts, Baystate Health annually cares for 850,000 people, employs nearly 13,000 workers, and trains approximately 800 medical students, residents and fellows as well as hundreds of future nurses and allied health professionals. Offering the full array of health services, this 1,000-bed hospital system includes: Baystate Medical Center, a teaching hospital with the region’s only Level 1 trauma center; Baystate Children’s Hospital, the region’s only accredited, full service children’s hospital; and three community hospitals. Position Summary: Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications and partnering with the Director of Marketing and Consumer Engagement, the Director of Communications and Strategic Content (Director) develops content strategies, plans and deliverables for the System and its hospitals and services. The portfolio of responsibility includes corporate, internal, and external multi-channel communications and content development, as well as proactive and responsive media relations. Providing inspirational leadership to a team of eight, the Director ensures clear, consistent, compelling content and storytelling, aligned with system brand and messaging; and is the primary relationship manager with local and regional media, serving as both initiator and “go to” source for content, and as an internal advisor on strategic and/or complex matters.
Qualifications Summary: BA/BS degree; 10+ years’ progressive experience in strategic communications, media relations and multi-platform content development, preferably in health care or academic environment; management and staff supervision; deadline-driven, client-focused project management; and solid writing and editing skills. The ideal candidate is energetic, personable, self-directed, highly organized and data-driven, and able to be a credible and trusted advisor and thought partner, working collaboratively across the organization with transparency, discretion and integrity to build strong, respectful working relationships.
