What's New
Allison McCarthy - NESHS 2011 Healthcare Strategist of the Year
Several years ago, the Society developed this award to recognize the contributions and achievements of its members based on the following criteria:

• Provided outstanding performance in the areas of healthcare strategy, business and network development and physician relations.

• Mentored colleagues beginning their careers or assisted colleagues with their work or career issues.

• Conducted himself or herself with the highest ethical and professional standards.

Once again this year, the membership of NESHS has made a wonderful recommendation for an outstanding individual who truly exemplifies each of these attributes.

Allison McCarthy has over 20 years of healthcare experience and has been actively involved in NESHS, including serving as a past president, as well as with other organizations that advance our profession. She is a principal consultant at Barlow/McCarthy where she has been a thought leader in developing the whole arena of physician relations, recruitment, and medical staff development. Allison presents at national and regional conferences and is a lead faculty member at the Physician Recruitment Intensive Training program provided by the American Academy of Medical Management and has authored “A Practice Development Primer.”

Allison is described by her nominator as “an encouraging mentor, providing advice to colleagues.” One client said the following about her: “I found the work Allison did for our Referring Physician outreach program the most valuable of any consultant or organization. She helped us transform our program and take it to the next level. The day after our training we were implementing change. The impact on the success of our program was almost immediate. We still refer to our sessions with her making sure we are staying focused on what she taught us.”

When she’s not traveling from Northern Maine to Fairbanks, Alaska to Baton Rouge to the Midwest on consulting assignments, Allison splits her time as a “snowbird” between Plymouth, Mass. and Naples, Florida -- relaxing by walking, doing yoga or knitting. She grew up in Bath, Maine which is why she says she “is so ingrained in coastal New England.”

Upon accepting the award, Allison noted that she started out as an allied health professional and just kept getting further involved in the health care arena. She cited active participation in NESHS as a way of deepening her network and enhancing her own professional development and the potential to make a contribution.

We congratulate Allison on her accomplishments!
