Deborah Joelson - NESHS Healthcare Strategist of the Year
Deborah Joelson, Senior Vice President of Strategic Services at Tufts Medical Center, received the New England Society for Healthcare Strategy (NESHS) “Healthcare Strategist of the Year” award on Thursday, May 8th. Joelson was given the award at the society’s annual meeting and member educational conference on “Magic in the Minefield: Physician Alignment and You.”
The Society developed the award to recognize the contributions and achievements of its members based on the following criteria:
• Provided outstanding performance in the areas of healthcare strategy, business and network development and physician relations.
• Mentored colleagues beginning their careers or assisted colleagues with their work or career issues.
• Conducted himself or herself with the highest ethical and professional standards.
Through the course of her career, Deb has particularly focused on mentoring other women. She is well-known by her colleagues for aptly employing her sense of humor in challenging situations.
Deb’s active involvement in the NESHS has included participating on its Board from 2000 to 2006, serving as Board Secretary from 2001 to 2006. She is a currently a member of the Advisory Boards of Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation and the Bingham Program.
In her role at Tufts Medical Center, she is responsible for strategic planning, network development, marketing, payer negotiations, and public, government and community relations. Prior to joining Tufts Medical Center, she was Vice President of Planning and Network Development for Partners Community HealthCare, Inc.(PCHI), the physician network of the Partners HealthCare System. At PCHI she was responsible for expanding the primary care physician network in Eastern Massachusetts through acquisitions, mergers or affiliation arrangements with group practices, IPAs and PHOs. She was also responsible for strategic planning for the organization including the development of PCHI’s strategy to create a clinically integrated system.
Before PCHI, Deb held a variety of strategic planning positions, ultimately Vice President of Strategic Planning, at the Medical Center of Central Massachusetts (now part of UMass Memorial) in Worcester. From 1978 to 1987, Deb held positions of increasing responsibility at the Massachusetts Hospital Association where she represented member hospitals with regional and state health organizations, ultimately serving as director of the Metropolitan Boston Hospital Council. In the early 80’s she coordinated the development of a regional emergency medical services system in greater Boston.
Deb received an MBA with a concentration in Health Care Management from Boston University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tufts University.
